Apple countersues Epic Games, requests damages for breach of contract

The legal battle between Apple and Epic Games took a surprise twist with the former filing a countersuit against the latter.

In its court filing, Apple claims Epic's lawsuit is "nothing more than a basic disagreement over money". The iPhone maker added that Epic "simply wants to pay nothing for the tremendous value it derives from the App Store" and "Epic's demands for special treatment and cries of retaliation cannot be reconciled with its fragrant breach of contract and its own business practices".

In addition, Apple provided examples on how Epic took advantage of everything the App Store had to offer. Epic used more than 400 of Apple's APIs and frameworks, five versions of Apple SDK, had its apps reviewed more than 200 times, has pushed more than 140 updates to Apple customers, and enjoyed "free promotion and favourable tweets" from Apple to more than 500 million end users whenever a new season for Fortnite was released.

Apple concluded its countersuit by stating that Epic's "willful, brazen, and unlawful conduct" cannot be left unchecked, and requested for damages and a court order to stop Epic from advancing its unfair business practices.
