Apple could lead 5G smartphone shipments in 2020
Apple may not have a 5G iPhone model this year, but it is expected to lead the 5G smartphone market in 2020 according to research firm Strategy Analytics.
Ken Hyers, Director at Strategy Analytics, expects Apple to pass current 5G market leaders Samsung and Huawei with three 5G models in 2020 if the current upgrade rates for newly introduced iPhone models are matched. Ville-Petteri Ukonaho, Associate Director at Strategy Analytics, added that Apple is set to lead the 5G smartphone market in 2020 alongside Huawei as both brands are going to dominate the two largest 5G markets next year.
In the long term, Samsung is expected to take the crown as it has a broader range of price points for 5G phones and is still the biggest phone manufacturer in the world. Huawei's growth may be restricted by the U.S trade ban, but it will be the dominant 5G phone vendor in China.
5G, a new design, and cameras are said to be the key highlights of the 2020 iPhone lineup according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The 2020 iPhone lineup is rumored to have OLED screen sizes in 6.7-inches, 5.4-inches and 6.1-inches. They are likely to use Qualcomm's X55 modem chip, which can support all major frequency bands in the world.
