Apple could ditch Face ID for in-screen Touch ID by 2021

Apple introduced Face ID on the iPhone X in 2017.

Face ID could be replaced by in-screen Touch ID by 2021.

Credit Suisse released an investor note in China claiming that screen suppliers are "actively developing full screens" without notches at the top for Apple. In addition, it expects Apple to release at least one new iPhone model next year without a notch. This will pave the way for Apple to ditch Face ID and use in-screen Touch ID for the 2021 iPhone lineup.

In a separate report by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is believed to be introducing at least one iPhone model next year with a smaller notch. Kuo also believes the notch will be removed from at least one of the new iPhone models next year.

Earlier this month, Chinese media outlets claimed that Apple will release a new iPhone model with in-screen Touch ID for the Chinese market. Kuo wrote in 2018 that Apple is waiting for Fingerprint On Display (FOD) technology to mature before implementing it on the iPhone. Apple has submitted patent applications for in-screen Touch ID in the past few years.
