Code indicates Apple plans to use A18 chips in all iPhone 16 models
It looks like even the regular iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will get new chips this year.

Code uncovered in Apple’s backend indicates that Apple plans to release four new iPhone 16 phones this year and that all four will use the same A-series chip.
According to the report, the code includes the following iPhone identifiers:
- iPhone 17,1
- iPhone 17,2
- iPhone 17,3
- iPhone 17,4
- iPhone 17,5
Apple traditionally ties the identifier number to the chip used. In the case of the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max had the identifiers iPhone 16,1 and iPhone 16,2 respectively, and both were powered by the A17 Pro chip.
The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, on the other hand, had the identifiers iPhone 15,4 and iPhone 15,5, and they were powered by the A16 Bionic.
If Apple keeps up with tradition, it means that all of this year’s iPhones will be powered by the new A18 chip. This makes sense because of the additional computing power required by Apple Intelligence.
As of now, the only iPhones to meet Apple Intelligence’s computing requirements are the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Expanding the list of devices that can run Apple Intelligence will certainly be a key goal for Apple.
Now even though all of this year’s iPhones will be powered by the same type of chip, Apple could still differentiate the Pro models by giving them an A18 Pro chip. The identifier only relates to the type of chip and not the specific chip itself.
Finally, you’ll probably notice that there are five model numbers listed but rumours say the iPhone 16 series will only consist of four phones. The last model could point to a possible fourth-generation iPhone SE, but we haven't heard rumours of one for a while now so it's hard to say.
