Apple may add heart rate monitoring and temperature sensing to its next premium true wireless earbud, the AirPods Pro 3.
Mark Gurman of Bloomberg revealed in his Power On newsletter that Apple is developing several health-related tracking features for the AirPods Pro, including a heart rate sensor, a temperature sensor, and other sensors that monitor physiological metrics.
Gurman said Apple's internal testing showed that the heart rate sensor's accuracy was not "terribly far off" that of the Apple Watch.
Other features for the Apple AirPods 3 will roll out over the next few years. In the long term, Apple wants to add small cameras to the AirPods Pro for AI features.
The AirPods Pro 2 currently boasts two health-related features. With iOS 18.1, it gained a clinical-grade, over-the-counter Hearing Aid capability for users with mild to moderate hearing loss. We recently tried this feature and found it impressive.
The AirPods Pro 2 also has a "Hearing Protection" feature, which minimises exposure to loud noises and prevents hearing damage.
