Apple AirPods to be manufactured in India for the first time
Future Apple AirPods would be made in India.
According to Reuters, two sources claim Apple supplier Foxconn will invest more than $200 million to build a factory in India to manufacture the AirPods. Not only is this the first time that AirPods are going to be manufactured in India, this is also the first time for Foxconn to be an AirPods supplier.
Foxconn reportedly discussed for months about whether to become a supplier of AirPods due to the lower profit margins, but decided to go ahead with the deal to strengthen engagement with Apple.
The setting up of an AirPods factory in India marks a milestone in Apple's strategy to diversify its production away from China. The Wall Street Journal reported in May 2022 that Apple informed contract manufacturers to expand production outside of China. Nikkei Asia published a similar report in October that some AirPods and Beats headphones would be made in India.
