Apple to adopt touch-sensitive, solid-state buttons for the Apple Watch?

The Apple Watch Series 3.

Remember the solid state Home button on the iPhone 7? It's coming to the Apple Watch soon.

A source with direct knowledge of Apple's plans told Fast Company that the Apple Watch will be getting solid state buttons which can sense the touch of a finger and not move up or down. While Apple will retain the current button configuration of a button and a digital crown, both will not physically click. The button press will be simulated through Apple's Haptic Engine. The digital crown can still be physically rotated to navigate content on the Apple Watch.

The move to solid-state buttons will help Apple design a more water-resistant Apple Watch and free up more space internally to fit a bigger battery. Solid-state buttons also can be used by Apple to integrate sensors for gathering health-related data such as heart rhythms.

The solid-state buttons could appear on the Apple Watch as early as this year, or, if not, in the 2019 Apple Watch lineup. In the longer term, Apple is said to be working towards a smartwatch with no buttons at all. Specific areas on the side of the Apple Watch would respond to finger touches.
