Apple's latest acquisition is expected to boost its AR offerings in the near future.

The iPhone maker confirmed it has acquired U.K-based visual effects firm iKinema, but it did not reveal the purpose or plans. iKinema develops software for movies and games that offers full-body motion-capture which can apply to an individual's physical movement to an animated character.

iKinema's motion capture technology has an extensive list of partners and customers including Disney, Fox, Tencent, Microsoft, Intel, Nvidia, Sony, Epic Games and Square Enix. The acquisition is likely to strengthen Apple's efforts in augmented reality, gaming, Animoji and Memoji.
