2024 iPad lineup refresh might include larger 12.9-inch iPad Air

Apple might introduce a 12.9-inch iPad Air model as part of the lineup refresh in 2024.

The 2024 iPad lineup refresh could see the debut of a bigger iPad Air model

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed in his latest note that the 2024 iPad lineup refresh will start with the introduction of a new 12.9-inch iPad Air model. There will also be a smaller 10.9-inch model.

Even though the new iPad Air models are still sporting LCD panels, they will be using panels with the same oxide backplane as the current iPad Pro models which should deliver better display performance.

In line with recent reports of a switch to OLED for the iPad Pro, Kuo reiterates that the 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pros will arrive with a new design and M3 chip in Q2 2024.

As for the entry-level iPad, Apple will reportedly discontinue the 9th-gen model after the launch of the 11th-gen model.

The iPad mini will also be updated, but a recent rumour indicates a modest spec bump. Both the new entry-level iPad and iPad mini are listed as the iPads with the least priority for Apple's 2024 production roadmap.

2023 is the first year that Apple didn't announce any new iPads, which means there are currently iPads in the lineup that were released as early as 2021.

Apple also confirmed that it is expecting iPad revenue to "decelerate significantly from the September quarter due to a different timing of product launches".

Even with the refresh of the entire iPad lineup in 2024, Kuo predicts the increase in iPad shipments will be modest compared to this year. He foresees about 52 to 54 million iPads being shipped next year, which is still lower than the peak shipment of 63 million units in 2022.
