The Aorus X9 is the latest notebook with crazy specifications that wants to replace your desktop

We've seen our fair share of gaming laptops with insane specifications. These aren't machines for the faint-hearted, and they come with over-the-top features that you wouldn't even think you needed from a laptop, like liquid-cooling and an actual mechanical keyboard.

The Aorus X9 falls right into this category of products, going up against the likes of the ASUS ROG GX800 and MSI GT75VR 7RE Titan. It's a desktop replacement through and through, and it looks the part with a bevy of super high-end specifications.

Here's an overview of what you're getting:

  • 17.3-inch 3,840 x 2,160-pixel IPS display
  • Intel Core i7-7820HK processor (2.9GHz, 8MB L3 cache)
  • 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 2,400MHz RAM
  • Dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070s in SLI
  • 2x 512GB PCIe SSDs
  • 94.24Wh battery
  • 428 x 314 x 23.5-29.9mm
  • 3.59kg

The above configuration will cost you a whopping S$5,699 and come with a 2-year warranty, so it's certainly not something you just go out and buy on a whim. The laptop first showed up at CES 2017, so Aorus has certainly taken its time in bringing it to the market.

The display is clearly one of the standout features, and it's an X-Rite Pantone-certified panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and 5ms response time.

If our experience with the Gigabyte Aero 15 is any indication, the X-Rite Pantone certification makes for quite vibrant and accurate colors. Furthermore, the speedy refresh rate should provide a smooth and fluid gaming experience.

Another highlight is the keyboard, which features low-profile mechanical switches and customizable RGB lighting. Aorus claims that this is the world's thinnest laptop to feature a mechanical keyboard, measuring 29.9mm at its thickest point.

The dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070s in SLI and overclockable processor will also tear through any game out there, with this graphics configuration reportedly being up to 30 per cent quicker than a single GeForce GTX 1080.

You'll need a beefy cooling system to keep everything running cool, and the laptop is equipped with four fans and eight heat pipes, with large cooling vents located around the chassis. You can also create custom fan speed curves using the built-in Command & Control program.

Aorus talked up the laptop's design as well. RGB lights adorn the front and back of the aluminum chassis, and it supposedly takes cues from exotic sport cars and fighter jets, while the exhaust vents at the bottom are arranged in a pattern reminiscent of a hawk's wings.

That said, the Aorus X9 is definitely not a product for the masses, and it'll likely only interest those who absolutely must have desktop-class performance on a laptop.
