Animal Crossing: New Horizons new character salutes the 88 y.o. New Leaf grandma
Cast your mind back to 2019, guys. Do you recall the news about the 87-year-old grandma who made gaming headlines for clocking an absurd amount of playtime on Animal Crossing: New Leaf? No? Well, that's ok - here's a refresher.
Last year, a man called Paul Hubans went on Twitter to share his 87-year-old (now 88-year-old, of course) grandma Audrey's 3DS activity log, which looked pretty normal except for the fact that the old lady had spent over 3580 hours playing New Leaf.
Doing the math, it comes down to just under 150 days, and that's assuming she kept going without a break. Obviously, she didn't do that, so Hubans proceeded to clarify that she had played the game almost every single day for the past four years! Anyway, Hubans then let his grandma take the stage herself through a YouTube video, and naturally, the Internet's delicate heart melted as Mayor "Audie" gave them a tour of her town. Comments from adoring viewers poured in, one of which joked about petitioning Nintendo to have a character called "Audie" in the next game.
Well, it seems Nintendo did read that comment after all, because "Audie" is officially a character in the franchise's fifth title, New Horizons!
The character, which is a dress-wearing wolf sporting white and purple sunglasses, was first spotted by Redditors during Nintendo World Report's review of the game, and some of them made the link back to Hubans' post from 2019. Of course, he caught wind of Nintendo's subtle nod of respect for his grandma's dedication and tweeted out a response thanking everyone for making it a thing, adding that he nearly choked up when he saw it. Aye, that makes two of us, man.
We've only got about two more days before we can meet Audie (the in-game one) - Animal Crossing: New Horizons releases for the Switch this Friday on the 20th of March, and you can bet Tom Nook's entire enterprise that we'll be snagging a copy.
