Android tablets revival? Google puts up several job listings for Android tablet development
In our Android recent tablet reviews (1, 2, 3), we’ve lamented how Android tablets don’t get to see the support they deserve. In fact, it’s barely been 2.5 years since Google officially announced that it ceased Android tablet production. But, that might change now.
As spotted by 9To5Google, Google has listed a peculiar job listing on its internal Careers portal - it’s for a Senior Engineering Manager in the Android Tablet App Experience department, based in the U.S.
“We believe that the future of computing is shifting towards more powerful and capable tablets. We are working to deliver the next chapter of computing and input by launching seamless support across our platforms and hero experiences that unlock new and better ways of being productive and creative.” - Job Listing
We weren’t expecting a revival of Android tablets, but Google might’ve been spurred on by the constant, low-profile releases the market sees (there aren’t that many current flagship-grade ones). Also, 9To5Google also pointed towards two other roles for Android tablets, both with equally ambitious objectives:
Does this mean Google finally recognises the value of Android tablets, even if it’s just for entertainment and casual use? Will Google even care about bringing its newer products (tablets or not) to Singapore? All this is still up for debate, but we should be seeing better Android tablet experiences should all these come to pass.
