Android 14 developer preview comes online, live version to come after July

Android 14 Developers Preview.

Android 14 is now ready for community development, and it looks like the new mobile operating system will be ready after July 2023.

Development timeline for Android 14.

According to the Android development team, these two months (February and March 2023) will be open to developers for preview and testing before going into its first beta release come April. Android 14’s first platform stability milestone (where they do final compatibility testing for apps, SDKs, and libraries) begins in June. The operating system is expected to go live after July when the OS goes out to end-users, and the complete set of features will be revealed.

While the team didn’t share too much about new features, Android 14 (codenamed Upside Down Cake) features new APIs that cascade into valuable additions to the OS. For example, a new Grammar Inflection API now easily supports grammatical gender changes for languages that follow these rules (like French, for instance). This new API expands two core Android features: per-app language support and translation services.

Another new accessibility tweak is non-linear font scaling up to 200%, which makes the Android operating system even more user-friendly for low-vision users. The developer preview allows app makers to test the new 200% font scaling for their apps to ensure that it’s compatible and still user-friendly.

To get a developers’ preview of Android 14, you’ll need a compatible Pixel phone or emulate the work-in-progress operating system on a phone/tablet via Android Studio.
