Analyst predicts Apple-custom chips powering Mac in 2021 and cars by 2023

While rumors of Apple shifting away from Intel for the Mac lineup are nothing new, analyst Ming-Chin Kuo claims that the Apple Car system will run on custom designed chipsets by 2023.

In his latest research note, Kuo reiterated that Apple will introduce its first Mac with custom ARM-based chips in 2020 or 2021. Apple will no longer be reliant on Intel’s processor release schedule and can potentially have higher profit margins.

Kuo also predicts that Apple will depend more on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) as the latter has high quality design and production standards compared to other chip makers. As a result, he expects TSMC to continue to be the exclusive supplier of the A-series chipsets for 2019 and 2020.

Looking ahead, TSMC is in a good position to secure orders for Apple’s custom designed chipsets which will power the latter’s autonomous smart cars.
