AMD may be preparing an even higher-end X590 chipset

AMD hasn't failed to impress so far with its new Ryzen 3000 processors and X570 chipset, but the word going around now is that there might be an even higher-end X590 chipset waiting in the pipeline. To be clear, the X570 chipset is already a premium offering, and MSI's CEO has gone on record saying that most X570 motherboards will be pretty expensive, so it's not immediately clear what X590 will be bringing to the table.

The rumors come courtesy of a teaser photo that emerged on Twitter that referenced the X590 chipset. The post has since been deleted, but a member of the ComputerBase forum dug around in Gigabyte's BIOS files for its upcoming X570 boards and found multiple references to "X570/X590", which suggests that it isn't just some typo.

X570 already comes with 20 PCIe 4.0 lanes, 16 of which can be assigned among different I/O options. That said, X590 could add more PCIe 4.0 lanes, which may dovetail with reports that ASMedia is on track to finish tape-outs for PCIe 4.0 chip solutions by the end of 2019.

Alternatively, X590 could be a more robust solution designed around the 16-core Ryzen 9 3950X, which doesn't launch until September. That said, it could also house things like beefier VRM designs meant to accommodate the more powerful chip.

Of course, all this is purely speculation for now, and we'll have to wait for official word from AMD for confirmation.
