AMD launches new Ryzen 9 7945HX3D mobile processor featuring first 3D V-Cache for laptops

AMD has broadened its Dragon Range CPU line with the introduction of the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D, the company's first laptop processor equipped with 3D V-Cache technology. Announced at this year's ChinaJoy expo, this new processor is targeted towards gamers and high-end laptop users and offers an expanded L3 cache for improved performance.

AMD has also confirmed that the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D is based on the Zen 4 architecture, with 16 cores, 32 threads, a base clock of 2.3GHz, and a peak boost clock of 5.4GHz. This new chip joins AMD's lineup of powerful desktop replacement-class mobile CPUs (also read our review of AMD's fastest desktop CPU here).

Just like its desktop counterpart, the distinguishing feature of the new mobile processor is the monstrous 128MB L3 cache, which includes 96MB on the V-Cache CCD and 32MB on the remaining CCD. Furthermore, the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D is designed to operate at a lower maximum temperature compared to its predecessor, the 7945HX, aiming to maintain performance under an 89-degree Celsius threshold. This also translates to a lower operational TDP, where AMD puts it at just "55W+".

According to AMD, the new Ryzen 9 7945HX3D is also expected to outperform its predecessor by an average of 15 per cent and offers up to a 23 per cent performance increase in gaming (varying from title to title), thanks to the presence of the huge V-Cache. This peak performance over the 7945HX can be achieved when the CPU operates at just 40W TDP. However, raising the power draw to 70W might reduce performance to around 11 percent above that of the 7945HX, thus reducing the performance improvement accorded by the presence of the V-Cache.

In terms of availability, AMD has announced a partnership with ASUS ROG, making the new Ryzen 9 7945HX3D processor exclusive to the upcoming ROG Scar 17 X3D laptop, initially. The laptop, equipped with RTX 4090 graphics, is set to hit the market on Aug 22.
