AMD Loses Yet Another Top Graphics Executive
Just weeks after AMD's VP & CTO, Graphics Divison, Eric Demer's departure, yet another top level graphics executive is leaving AMD. This time round it is the turn of the company's Director of Client Technology Unit, Godfrey Cheng.
Most recently, Cheng was part of AMD's Llano launch, but before that, he was one of the main players behind ATI's All-in-Wonder graphics cards which were all the rage in the late 90's. He headed that project from 1998 to 2006 before moving on to develop technologies like Avivo and CrossFireX.
There's no official word about the reasons for his departure, but it is believed that Cheng is following in the footsteps of Eric Demers and Rick Bergman because of a conflict of ideas on how best to leverage on AMD's assets.
The timing couldn't possibly be worse seeing that AMD has lost three top technical executives in the space of a couple of months. Furthermore, NVIDIA has just launched their wildly successful GeForce GTX 680 and could do even more damage in the coming months and weeks as they seek to expand on their GTX 600 series offerings.
