AMD has just announced that it has inked a deal with Tianjin Haiguang Advanced Technology Investment Co., Ltd (THATIC), to develop x86 Server SoCs in China. The chips developed as part of this venture can be sold only in China.

As part of the deal, AMD will receive US$293 million, and possibly further royalties in future.

According to reports, AMD will be contributing only their high-performance x86 and SoC IPs, and will provide engineering and technical resources.

THATIC, on the other hand, will provide the financing behind the venture. THATIC is the investment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Although not explicitly stated, reports indicate that bulk of the x86 IP that AMD will provide will be related to AMD's upcoming Zen processor.
