When AMD unveiled its 3rd generation Threadripper processors late last year, it said that it will announce an even more powerful 64-core processor sometime in 2020.
That time is now and that processor is the Threadripper 3990X. AMD calls it the world's first 64-core HEDT (high-end desktop) processor and it has some crazy high specs. Here they are:
- 64 cores
- 128 threads
- 256MB L3 cache
- 2.9GHz base clock
- 4.3GHz turbo clock
- 64 PCIe lanes
- 280W TDP
AMD didn't share much benchmark numbers but did show off the chip's performance in Cinebench R20. It's multi-thread score was about 25,000 which is 47% more than the 32-core Threadripper 3970X.
This isn't really a processor for gamers. Of course, you could get it if you feeling flushed, but this class of processors is really targeted at content creators who need massive CPU horsepower to render graphics and edit videos.
AMD also shared that the Threadripper 3990X will be available from 7 February and will be priced at US$3,990 (~S$5,403).
