Amazon’s new devices make turning your home smart a reality

Amazon showcased a slew of smart devices during their “Amazon Devices & Services” event that was live-streamed last night.

To get more people interacting with Alexa at home, Amazon introduced a new Echo Show that you can mount to your wall or place on your counter, a Blink video doorbell with video, audio, and smartphone alerts, and a video conferencing solution for kids called the Amazon Glow.

To help users come to grips with home management, Amazon has a new smart thermostat and a Ring security ecosystem.


Echo Show 15

The new Echo Show 15 is a 15.6-inch, 1080p Full HD display comes powered by Amazon’s own Amazon AZ2 Neural Edge processor and can now be mounted on a wall or placed on a counter in portrait or landscape orientation.

This is a departure from the previous Echo Show 10 that had a smaller screen and could only sit on a counter or tabletop in landscape.

With its large screen and support for 1080P video streaming, the Echo Show 15 can also double as your kitchen TV. Just ask Alexa to watch movies and TV shows from Prime Video, Netflix, or Hulu.

A customisable home screen allows Alexa-enabled apps to control smart home devices, track packages, leave notes for other people in the house, view shared calendars, and connect and communicate with things like security cameras or other Echo devices. However, the camera this time is 5MP (compared to the 13Mp of the Show 10) and lacks auto-framing.

Blink Video Doorbell

Connect it to an app for alerts on the go.

The Blink Video Doorbell uses a wired or Wi-Fi connection and its app to provide day and night coverage of your front door for up to two years powered by two AA lithium batteries. It features 1080p HD day and night video, two-way audio, chime app alerts, and the ability to connect to and sound your existing in-home chime.

Video footage can be stored for free locally or pay for an optional Blink Subscription plan to record, save, and share events online.

The Blink Outdoor can be supplied limitless energy for constant coverage.

To improve home security, Blink also announced the new Blink Floodlight Camera and the Blink Solar Panel Mount. The new Blink Floodlight Camera is a battery-powered LED smart floodlight security camera with 700 lumens of motion-triggered lighting. Used together with the Blink Solar Panel Mount, and you’ll get almost infinite use for nonstop peace of mind.

Kids now have their own child-friendly interactive, video conferencing tool provided by Amazon. The Amazon Glow has an 8-inch screen where video calls are done. But it also projects a 19-inch touch-sensitive, projected space in front of it where kids can interact in games, art, stories, and even characters like Anna and Elsa from Disney’s Frozen, Woody and Buzz from Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story, and more.

The Glow will come with a two-year warranty and cost US$249.99 under its early access price (U.P. US$299.99). with that, you also get a mat, a mat case, 1-year of Amazon Kids+, and is bundled with Tangram Bits. A Glow mobile app will soon be coming on iOS and Android based devices. The early access Glow program starts today in the United States at, with the device shipping to U.S. early access customers in the coming weeks.


Around the house smarts

Following their Ring Always Home cam launch from last year, the company is finally shipping the product this year. Priced at US$249.99, you can now have a flying sentinel protecting your home.

But that is just one Ring security solution from Amazon this year. The new Ring Alarm Pro is a Ring Alarm base station built around an eero Wi-Fi 6 router. This means that the device has constant Wi-Fi access for its alarm and motion detectors to provide professional monitoring and protection for both online and offline threats. Pricing for the whole kit is currently unavailable.

Finally, there is the Amazon Smart Thermostat. This is a smart, affordable Energy Star-certified thermostat that works with Alexa for only US$59.99.
