A.I. gets a boost with Intel's upcoming Knights Mill Xeon Phi processor

If you think artificial intelligence is the stuff of science fiction, think again. A lot of what happens in our daily lives these days is already governed by some form of artificial intelligence. For example, how does Facebook recommend who to add as friends? Or how does it automatically tag known faces in a photo? In Google Photos, how does it create those nice photo montages or touch up photos and stitch video stories? And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

We haven’t even begun to factor what will happen when 50 billion connected devices start to communicate among themselves and generate/collect data – a figure that Intel estimates the world will have by the year 2020. This is where advanced analytics are required to cut through all that data generated and gain deeper insights through A.I.

To make that goal a reality, Intel unveiled the next generation Xeon Phi processor family (codenamed Knights Mill) that will be focused on machine learning and A.I. The third generation Xeon Phi is expected to be available sometime in 2017.

At this point of time, not much other details have been shared for the new third generation Xeon Phi processor. For reference, the current second generation Xeon Phi is codenamed Knights Landing.
