ADATA has announced the launch of two new portal external drives that not only come with the usual promises of performance, but have also been designed with the environment in mind.

First, we have the HC300 ECO which is a portable external drive that uses a traditional spinning hard drive. It comes in 1TB and 2TB capacities.

The housing is 10.3mm thin and features a shock-resistant design that can protect against damage. Interestingly, the drive still uses a micro-USB port and connects to your system via a USB-A connector.

The UC310 ECO, on the other hand, is a pocketable swivel-type flash drive that comes in flavours of up to 256GB. It supports the USB 3.2 interface.

Both the HC300 ECO and UC310 ECO come preloaded with the Backup ToGo software to help you schedule backups and enable real-time cloud sync.

So far, they sound like pretty standard drives, but what sets both drives apart is that they are made with eco-friendly materials.

The casings of both drives are made from post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials, such as the 5-gallon plastic water jugs you see in office corners. These materials are sourced from a single location to further lower their carbon footprint. According to ADATA, using these recycled materials effectively reduces the carbon footprint of the drives by 48%.

The drives' packaging is also made from materials certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This means consumers can be confident that they are made from processes that significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions, waste water, and energy.

Every small step we take for the environment counts, and this is a refreshing step forward for even seemingly inconsequential and everyday products like portable external drives.

Availability and pricing

ADATA says the UC310 ECO will be in stores in May. No word on the availability of the HC300 ECO, but we’ll update this article when we get more information.
