Xiaomi joins the likes of Vivo and Oppo in launching a new smartphone with no notch. The Chinese phone maker claims that the Mi Mix 3 has the "ultimate full screen display" by hiding the front-facing cameras on a magnetic sliding mechanism.

Unlike the Vivo Nex and Oppo Find X who use motors for the sliding mechanism, Xiaomi states that the Mi Mix 3 has magnetic slider design which uses neodymium permanent magnets to make the sliding screen more reliable and functional. It is tested to have a life expectancy of 300,000 cycles. The magnetic slider can be used to answer a call, take a selfie, open the shortcuts drawer and instantly access customized apps on the phone.

Xiaomi added that it managed to reduce the chin by 4.46mm when compared to the Mi Mix 2S and increased the screen-to-body ratio to 93.4%! The front panel is dominated by a 6.4-inch FHD+ (2,340 x 1,080 pixels) AMOLED display with 19:5:9 aspect ratio, 103.8% NTSC color gamut and 600 nit max brightness.

The Mi Mix 3 is also positioned as the "ultimate photography" device; the dual cameras on the back consist of a 12MP f/1.8 lens with dual pixel autofocus and a 12MP f/2.4 telephoto lens while the front cameras are made up of a primary 24MP lens and a secondary 2MP dedicated DOF lens.

Other imaging features include steady handheld night photography, 960fps slow-motion video, AI scene detection (optimized for 12 scenarios), AI studio lighting with 7 studio lighting effects and AI dynamic bokeh with adjustable depth of field effects.

The Mi Mix 3 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 mobile platform and up to 10GB RAM. It comes in two internal storage options: 128GB and 256GB. Other specs include wireless charging, AI button for Xiao Ai voice assistant, NFC, 4x4 MIMO, and a 4-sided curved ceramic body with 7-series aluminium frame. It is available in four variants at the following prices:

  • 6GB RAM + 128GB internal storage space - 3,299 yuan (~S$655)
  • 8GB RAM + 128GB internal storage space - 3,599 yuan (~S$715)
  • 8GB RAM + 256GB internal storage space - 3,999 yuan (~S$795)
  • 10GB RAM + 256GB internal storage space - 4,999 yuan (~S$993)

There would be a 5G model which is estimated to launch in Q1 2019. Do expect the price tag to be higher than the four variants. Each model is bundled with a 10W wireless charger and a phone protector (probably a case). The Mi Mix 3 will be available in China from 1 Nov while other markets in the region will get it soon.
