5 of the top 10 best selling phones in May are Chinese brands

While Apple managed to reclaim the best selling phone title from Samsung in May, both companies could be at risk of being taken over by Chinese phone brands in the next few years.

According to the latest data from Counterpoint's Market Pulse, five of the top 10 best selling phones are from Xiaomi, Huawei Vivo and Oppo. The entry-level Xiaomi Redmi 5A managed to edge out the Apple iPhone 8 Plus for 4th position with a market share of 2.2%. The Huawei P20 Lite, Vivo X21, Redmi 5 Plus/Note 5 and Oppo A83 came in at 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th position respectively.

The iPhone 8 was the best selling smartphone model in May followed closely by the Samsung Galaxy S9+. The latter topped the list in April. The iPhone 8 and Galaxy S9+ each garnered 2.4% of the global smartphone market.

The iPhone X came in 3rd with a market share of 2:3%, which is rather impressive considering many critics thought that the high price tag would deter consumers from buying it. The Galaxy S9 is ranked 6th with a market share of 2.1%.

Chinese phone brands are seeing very strong growth in the global market as they expand outside of their home country. With Xiaomi planning to enter the U.S market in 2019, it is definitely the company to watch out.
