Why watch a gangster movie when you can play three of them?

2K Games have finally unveiled Mafia: Trilogy - a package that includes three Mafia games, along with oodles of extras to chew on. These open world games explore the troubled lives of three gangsters across different eras of organised crime in America.

Mafia: Trilogy consists of three games:

  • Mafia: Definitive Edition - A remake;

  • Mafia II: Definitive Edition - An ultra HD remaster;

  • Mafia III: Definitive Edition - A re-release.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is by far the most ambitious title in the trilogy - a built-from-the-ground-up remake of the classic 2002 game. This remake overhauls the original with an updated script, expanded backstories, additional cutscenes, new gameplay sequences, refurbished mechanics and other modern enhancements using the engine that powered Mafia III. 2K Games released some screenshots alongside the announcement, and they look stunning.

Mafia III developer Hangar 13 is developing the remake. The studio’s President and CCO Haden Blackman spoke about the project, saying:

The original Mafia made such a lasting impact on how video games can tell serious stories, and we know how much the series’ fans still revere it. Nearly 20 years after the Mafia series started, we now have an amazing opportunity to introduce this beloved game to a new generation of players and give longtime fans a chance to relive Tommy’s story with a stellar modern presentation, as well as new story elements and gameplay features.

Mafia II: Definitive Edition is an ultra HD remaster of the fan favourite game in the trilogy, with 4K-compatible graphics and all previously-released DLC for the game, including campaign add-ons like The Betrayal of Jimmy, Jimmy’s Vendetta and Joe’s Adventures. Unlike the other two games in the trilogy, Mafia III: Definitive Edition is a simple re-release, bundling the game together with all of its previously-released DLC. No remastered visuals, no new content.

Here’s the kicker: Mafia II: Definitive Edition and Mafia III: Definitive Edition are available right now! These two games can either be purchased separately, or as part of the Mafia: Trilogy bundle. If players already own Mafia II on Steam, they will automatically be granted Mafia II: Definitive Edition for free. The same goes for Mafia III owners on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. Owners of any combination of the three Mafia games will also get a discounted offer to complete the trilogy.

Mafia: Definitive Edition will only launch later this year on August 28, 2020, but it's already available for pre-orders at US$39.99 (around S$56). Mafia II: Definitive Edition and Mafia III: Definitive Edition go for US$29.99 (around S$42) each. Mafia: Trilogy can be purchased for US$59.99 (around S$85) - saving you quite a bit of money in the long run, if you’re intent on playing all three games.

Mafia: Trilogy will be playable on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC via Steam. The bundle will arrive later on Google Stadia and the Epic Games Store, as well. You'll have to wait until August to play the Mafia remake, but judging from those screenshots - it might be worth the wait!
