2027 iPhones may get a more power-efficient OLED display

The use of a more power-efficient OLED display could result in longer battery life for 2027's iPhones.

Apple could introduce a more power-efficient OLED display in the 2027 iPhone lineup.

The Elec reports that Apple is planning to improve its current LTPO OLED displays by using oxide in the transistors. For those unfamiliar, every iPhone screen has millions of these transistors that manage individual pixels. They generally fall into two types: ones that save power but work more slowly, and others that are faster but use more power.

Apple will reportedly use more oxide in the transistors, which in turn will consume less power and improve the battery life of the iPhone when the screen is running at low refresh rates. This new LTPO OLED technology is known as "LTPO3".

Apple has already tested LTPO3 on the Apple Watch Series 10 and is now confident in scaling the display technology for the iPhone. However, due to the more complex manufacturing process, Apple needs additional time before it can bring LTPO3 to market.

The company is expected to decide by Q3 2025 whether or not to adopt LTPO3 for the iPhone. If it moves forward with the plan, display suppliers would have about two years to invest in new equipment and ramp up production.

Apple could introduce the LTPO3 display on at least one 2027 iPhone model—widely believed to be the successor of the rumoured iPhone 17 Air since its ultra-thin design could compromise the battery size.
