2020 iPhones rumored to come with 120Hz ProMotion displays

Displays with high refresh rates are gaining traction among Android flagship phones and Apple is also said to be jumping on the bandwagon next year.

Industry sources told DigiTimes that Apple will be bumping the display refresh rate from the current 60Hz to 120Hz for the 2020 iPhone. This will bring the 2020 iPhone on par with the iPad Pro models, which have featured 120Hz ProMotion displays since 2017. Tipster @UniverseIce shared in July that Apple is considering a switchable 60Hz/120Hz refresh rate for the 2020 iPhone.

Doubling the display refresh rate will improve the responsiveness of the user interface with swiping and scrolling feeling more fluid. It will also allow the display to accurately depict 24, 48 and 60 FPS video content. However, higher display refresh rates could lower battery life.

There are a few flagship Android phones in the market with high display refresh rates. Razer is among the first to debut a 120Hz display with the first and second generation Razer Phone model. The OnePlus 7 Pro has a 90Hz refresh rate display while the ASUS ROG Phone II boasts an AMOLED screen with 120Hz refresh rate. The recently announced Google Pixel 4 also has a high refresh rate 90Hz display, but it is only enabled at high brightness levels.
