2020 iPhone might feature in-display Touch ID and Face ID

Apple is said to be working on in-display Touch ID for the 2020 iPhone.

The 2020 iPhone is said to use two biometric options, in-display Touch ID and Face ID to unlock and authenticate mobile payments.

People familiar with the plans told Bloomberg that Apple is developing in-screen fingerprint technology for as early as the 2020 iPhone lineup. The in-display fingerprint sensor is expected to allow the user to scan his/her fingerprint on a large portion of the display, and work in tandem with Face ID.

Apple is currently testing the in-display fingerprint technology internally and among its overseas suppliers. If testing is successful, Apple is planning to include it in the 2020 iPhone though the timeline may slip to 2021. Suppliers are rumored to be able to integrate the technology into iPhones, but Apple has not managed to mass produce it yet.

Bloomberg's report came a few weeks after analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that an iPhone with Face ID and an in-display Touch ID would arrive in 2021. Kuo believes Apple will use a variant of Qualcomm's ultrasonic fingerprint under-display system.

The sources also corroborated reports of a low-cost iPhone model coming in the first half of 2020. The low-cost iPhone will look similar to the iPhone 8 and have a physical Touch ID button.
