Apple has significant plans for the rear cameras on the iPhone in the next two years.

Sources told Bloomberg that the successor of the iPhone XS Max will come with three rear cameras. Tipster @OnLeaks has released purported renders of the iPhone XI with three rear cameras and a square bump.

The third camera is said to capture a larger field of view and enable a wider range of zoom. In addition, it could help take more pixels to be used in conjunction with an upcoming feature that can “automatically repair a photo or video to fit in a subject that may have been accidentally cut off from the initial shot”. Live Photos will be upgraded to take double the length of the video from three seconds to six seconds.

These upgrades will eventually be introduced for the other two handsets. The successor of the iPhone XR is rumored to have a rear dual-camera module. All three upcoming models are expected to look very similar to the existing models.

Apple is also testing several prototypes with USB-C ports, which suggests that Apple will eventually switch away from the Lightning port. Moving to USB-C will make the iPhone compatible with chargers for the iPad and MacBook. Macotakara reported last month that the 2019 iPhones "might" make the switch to USB-C.

As for the 2020 iPhone lineup, Apple is reportedly equipping the models with a more powerful 3D rear camera. The longer-range 3D camera is designed to scan the environment to create a 3D reconstruction of the real world, and can work up to about 15 feet (~4.5m). In comparison, the current 3D camera used in Face ID operates at distances between 25 to 50 cm.

The 3D camera will use a new laser scanner for more accurate depth perception and placement of virtual objects. It could also help the iPhone better capture depth. Apple is believed to be interested in Sony’s 3D camera technology. The new 3D camera will boost Apple’s AR push and enable more use cases such as displaying details of a structure beside an image. The 2020 iPhones are likely to sport more design changes as Apple would eventually have to equip them with 5G network connectivity.
