New AMD Radeon Pro 5600M on 16-inch MacBook Pro offers impressive performance gains
Earlier this week, Apple announced a new AMD Radeon Pro 5600M GPU upgrade option for its 16-inch MacBook Pro.
This is a new GPU from AMD that features 8GB of super-fast HBM2 memory, 40 compute units, and a whopping 2,540 stream processors. Memory bandwidth is a rich 394GB/s while total compute throughput is a claimed 5.3 TFLOPS.
It's pricey too. It's an extra S$1,050 over the step-up 16-inch MacBook Pro configuration that comes with a Core i9 processor and an AMD Radeon Pro 5500M GPU.
Fortunately, early tests seem to suggest that the premium is well worth it.
According to tests done by YouTube channel Max Tech, the 16-inch MacBook Pro with this new Radeon Pro 5600M GPU scored an incredible 43,144 points in the Geekbench 5 Metal test.
To put this number in perspective, it's 50% more than what a 16-inch MacBook Pro with the Radeon Pro 5500M GPU would achieve. It even beat the Radeon RX Vega 56 in the iMac Pro.
If you are buying a 16-inch MacBook Pro and you work with a lot of 3D graphics, you know which option you need to pick.
