Temperature, Power Consumption & Overclocking

Earlier, we spoke about the shortcomings of the cooler and our findings here confirmed that XFX GeForce 9600 GSO XXX Edition could perhaps do with an more elaborate cooler. At 79 degrees Celsius, it is one of the hottest cards in our labs. This is even more glaring when compared to ASUS EN8800 GS TOP, which uses the Glaciator cooler. That's the price you pay when pairing an insanely overclocked card with an emasculated cooler, (well we did mention the cooler resembles those used from the GeForce 6 days).

As far as power consumption goes, the XFX GeForce 9600 GSO XXX Edition was a little on the high side. It was much higher than the Powercolor PCS HD 4670, but was not much different from the GeForce 9600 GT and nearly identical to the ASUS EN8800 GS TOP. But if you take into account the performance it gives, then perhaps the figures are somewhat justified.

Taking into mind that the XFX GeForce 9600 GSO XXX Edition already comes massively overclocked out of the box, we didn't have high hopes for the card. Not surprisingly, we didn't manage to push the core clock speeds any further and could only manage an insignificant 30MHz at the memory, giving us 1960MHz DDR. This of course gave only a tiny boost to performance.
