Our Verdict
Let's get down to where it counts most - performance. For the Western Digital My Book 750GB Home Edition external drive, its USB 2.0 performance was generally better than average and its FireWire performance was definitely up to expectations (and far better than the Maxtor as highlighted in the review). eSATA performance while not outstanding, it was decent, thus making the My Book Home Edition pretty much a hard hitter in terms of performance.
Besides its performance, what makes the Western Digital My Book 750GB Home Edition a great overall product is its design and features. With its size and design, the My Book external storage unit is no larger than a standard soft cover novel and can almost fit anywhere. Also, the My Book comes in a safe color of black and can pretty much get along with almost any home decor. While it does not stand out like the Seagate FreeAgent Pro in terms of flashy design and style, you'll get no complaint from us as we found the whole book-like design ironically delightful. So if you're looking for a good external hard drive storage unit with great performance, you'll find it in Western Digital's My Book Home Edition. Of course with more interface options, you might find it going for a slight premium than other equivalent class of storage drive options. For those who can maximize the My Book Home Edition's connectivity options, you'll will find the added cost worthwhile, but for the rest of us, Western Digital has other variants with reduced connectivity options which would no doubt go easier on the wallet as well.
