Benchmarks (Part II)

When it comes to casual gaming, all three notebooks weren't cut out to be gaming platforms and you wouldn't want to even consider these if you require some good quality 3D graphics crunching power on the move. The aged Intel Extreme Graphics 2 integrated into each of the notebook could only muster enough processing power for very light gaming applications, which are mostly of the older genre. Then again, portability, not gaming, is the selling point of these notebooks.

Battery Life to Weight Ratio

In this section, we'll look to evaluate the portability and mobility of a given notebook. Battery life, mass and volume are among the many factors we consider with regards to mobility. By dividing the battery life of a notebook (uptime taken from MobileMark 2002) over the multiplication of mass (in kilograms) and volume (m³), we'll be able to derive a simple ratio of just how well balanced a given notebook is in terms of weight, volume and battery life.

*Do take note that this section does not factor in the performance figures for notebooks benchmarked with power saving features disabled while running off the abundant AC power supply. Battery saving modes and associated technologies such as Intel SpeedStep would kick in when a notebook is in portable mode where battery stamina is of paramount importance than maximum performance.

For a long time running, the IBM X40 ThinkPad had been the notebook to beat in our Battery Life to (Weight x Volume) ratio. At a ratio of 3.388, the X40 was unrivaled, until the Samsung Q30 entered our labs. Raising the bar of portability, the Samsung Q30, with its lightweight chassis, long battery life and small footprint, is now the new notebook to be contested as the most portable and functional lightweight notebook. With a ratio of 5.018, it appears the record is not going to be broken anytime soon.
