Conclusion

Our Thoughts

If one were to consider a good all-round digital camera, Panasonic's Lumix DMC-FX520 has a strong proposition to vie for this category. Designed to be first and foremost an easy and intuitive camera, the addition of its hybrid navigation interface via touch-screen and conventional controls gives the FX520 an edge over most other compact digital cameras of the same level. However, having to utilize both the touch screen and joystick for basic navigation acts as a double-edged sword here, especially so when we discovered the lack of touch-screen support for the main menu navigation. So it takes a little getting used to its input methods.

True, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX520 may be slightly heavier and chunkier than most other compact digital cameras, but its performance will make its bulk and its price worth the effort.

On the performance scale, the FX520 has proven itself to be a powerful device, especially so on its iA mode. For a 10.1-megapixel camera that comes with the risk of high noise levels on increasingly larger ISO numbers, we found little of these effects on the FX520, even at its maximum ISO1600 setting. In all honesty, while we see more cameras pushing the limits and giving consumers higher ISO sensitivity of up to 6400, we see little point in doing so when noise levels are prominently higher on such settings. Thus, Panasonic has definitely played the game well by balancing the FX520's imaging quality along with functional features and a new touch-based interface.
