Palit Radeon HD 4870 Sonic Dual Edition - Overclocked Goodness

By Kenny Yeo - 23 Sep 2008

Temperature, Power & Overclocking

Temperature

We are happy to report that the huge cooler on the Palit Radeon HD 4870 Sonic Dual Edition actually worked. At load, in both Sonic and Turbo mode, the card recorded a temperature of only 60 degrees Celsius. That's a whole 19 degrees Celsius cooler than a standard HD 4870!

Power

Remarkably, the power consumption of the Palit Radeon HD 4870 Sonic Dual Edition was significantly lower than that of the PowerColor PCS+ HD 4870 and even that of a standard HD 4870. Looking at our data, its figures were almost identical to that of the less powerful HD 4850, which left us rather impressed.

Overclocking

When attempting to overclock the Palit Radeon HD 4870 Sonic Dual Edition, we found that its BIOS capped us to a maximum of 790MHz for the core and 4400MHz for the memory. We managed to push it to this limit, and found that it performed up to 3% better than in Sonic mode.
