Conclusion
A Cooler Card
Overall, the Palit GeForce GTX 470 is a commendable take on the GeForce GTX 470. While performance hasn't improved due to Palit's decision to stick with reference clock speeds, the card does run significantly cooler, which is crucial considering how hot a standard GeForce GTX 470 can get. And while one could argue that we got lucky, nevertheless, we were thoroughly impressed with its overclocking performance.
But what's most impressive about the card, cooling and overclocking aside, is its price. When quizzed, Palit states that the card will go on sale for US$313, which, when you consider that most GeForce GTX 470 cards are listed at around US$350 on Newegg, is a definite bargain.
As for local pricing, local distributors Convergent informed us that they would only receive the card in the coming weeks and as such have yet to determine a price. However, we believe it will cost slightly more than the reference design card from Palit which is presently retailing in our market at S$559.
Looking ahead, NVIDIA is widely expected to release a new Fermi card at the upcoming Computex event in Taiwan. The card is dubbed the GeForce GTX 465, and as its name suggests, will fit right under the GeForce GTX 470. According to details we've recently learnt, the card will come with 352 stream processors while maintaining the same core and shader clock speeds as the GeForce GTX 470, whereas memory clock speeds will be toned down to 3206MHz DDR.
With Computex only a week away, we'll soon find out more details of upcoming models from NVIDIA. In the meantime, it's good to hear that NVIDIA is slowly but surely expanding on their Fermi lineup of cards, and hopefully it will be more positively received than the first set of Fermi cards.
