Our usual hardware suspects were rounded up to help in testing the MSI Radeon X1950 XTX. The testbed processor was an AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 (2.6GHz) and the motherboard used was a MSI K8N Diamond Plus. Kingston's low latency DDR400 RAM (2 x 512MB) modules were running in dual channel mode and finally, storage was by an 80GB Seagate 7200.7 SATA hard drive which had Windows XP Professional installed and updated with Service Pack 2 and DirectX 9.0c.

The original Radeon X1950 XTX we tested came with its own set of drivers, based on Catalyst 6.7. For the MSI, we again had to rely on the vendor's bundled drivers, which turned out to be based on Catalyst 6.9. Hence, there is a slight difference in driver versions, though the impact is minor. The other ATI cards in the roundup, like the overclocked HIS and Radeon X1900 XTX were running Catalyst 6.5. For the NVIDIA cards, the GeForce 7950 GX2 was tested on ForceWare 91.29 drivers. We have also added a GeForce 7900 GTX using 84.21 drivers as a reference. The following benchmarks were tested:

  • Futuremark 3DMark05 Pro (version 120)
  • Futuremark 3DMark06 Pro (version 102)
  • F.E.A.R
  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3: Chaos Theory (version 1.3)
  • Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (version 1.1)
  • Quake 4
