Conclusion

Both graphics chipmakers look to be engaging in an intense price war as this generation of GPUs draw towards a close. Those who already own a high-end graphics card are probably content to wait for the next generation but there are many who have yet to join this group and these are the users that both GPU makers are targeting their latest refreshes. On NVIDIA's turf, their high-end range has seen the most drastic change, of which the GeForce 7900 GS among a couple more spawned and we took MSI's version for a spin in this review.

The MSI NX7900GS-T2D256E-HD boasts full HDCP compliancy but has very averaging performance out of the box. But crank up the D.O.T. at max settings and you would turbo charge it to match or outpace some of the better pre-overclocked editions out there.

Given its modest specifications, the MSI NX7900GS-T2D256E-HD does not stand out particularly in the crowded retail scene. Having seen what the GeForce 7900 GS is capable of, we can say with much confidence that you can easily overclock the MSI to an acceptable level equal to those pre-overclocked versions from other brands. In the past, this could have been daunting but now, one could do so via user-friendly software utilities. MSI's policy regarding the use of its D.O.T software ensures that you will have peace of mind while doing so. Only by doing so can the MSI GeForce 7900 GS compete against its aggressive rivals in the marketplace. But with so many vendors offering overclocked editions, the D.O.T feature on the MSI may seem one step too many for the nonchalant consumers. Still, the option is there for anyone to turbo charge the MSI NX7900GS-T2D256E-HD to more compelling performance levels and it's just a mere few clicks away to set the option for good.

In the end, it's probably the reputation of the MSI brand that will bring in the sales. As one of the larger manufacturers in the world, its distribution reach also means that its products will reach more people. Meanwhile its relatively competitive pricing will no doubt lure customers who are content with its standard performance. Also noteworthy is that the MSI NX7900GS-T2D256E-HD is HDCP compliant and can aid HD content viewing without issues for a long while to come if that's the sort of future proofing you are looking for in your purchase (useful when keeping hardware parts for setting up supplementary systems). In short, the complete package from MSI is pretty decent and fits the needs of its prospective customers just nice.
