Test Setup

Admittedly, we were mostly done with AGP graphics card testing, but the GeForce 7800 GS along with a handful of Radeon X1000 series cards for AGP platforms made us reconsider and haul out our AGP graphics card testbed. Additionally, we made a few hardware, software and game test updates before we prepared this review in proper. Based on the Intel D875PBZ motherboard with a Pentium 4 3.0GHz processor (800MHz FSB) and 1GB of DDR400 Corsair memory, it is by no means a powerful AGP testbed, but it is definitely a decently modern system depicting the likely upgrade market group the GeForce 7800 GS was intended for.

To have a feel where the GeForce 7800 GS stands, we had with us two other AGP counterparts, the GeForce 6800 GT and GeForce 6800 GS. ATI's Radeon X850 XT Platinum Edition was also put into the comparison, though it's not a competitor to the GeForce 7800 GS in both price and performance.

For all NVIDIA cards, we utilized Forceware version 81.89. Although this does not support the GeForce 7800 GS AGP, we are aware of the device ID and since there is no change in the core and functions from other existing cards, we went ahead to add in two lines and we had ourselves a 'modified' Forceware 81.89 driver set that works perfectly with the GeForce 7800 GS from MSI. The sole ATI card was tested with Catalyst version 6.1. Herein are the benchmarks and game tests used to gauge the performance of all the cards:-

  • Futuremark 3DMark05 Pro (version 120)
  • Futuremark 3DMark06 Pro (version 102)
  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3: Chaos Theory (version 1.3)
  • Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (version 1.1)
  • Quake 4
