Additional Burns

Besides the standard set of media used to determine the write performance of any given DVD writer, another mode of test we conduct for a comprehensive assessment of DVD writers is to feed the drive with all available media at point of testing to get a better overview of media compatibility. Understanding a drive's media compatibility is especially important for anyone looking to purchase a DVD writer. In addition, we can also determine the brand of media that would allow 'OverDrive' or 'OverSpecification' writing. Since the media used in this section are used on a basis of availability at point of testing, formal write comparisons between drives will not be made here.

Just like the ASUS DRW-1814BLT, we set out to test the 18x writing speed of the LG GSA-H62N with no hint at what brands of 16x media would be capable of overspeeding to 18x. Basically, we could only bring out all the 16x media available at hand in our lab and then try them all, since LG did not provide any free samples. Fortunately, we managed to get it to burn at 18x for TDK's 16x DVD-R and DVD+R media (TTH02 and TDK003). However those two were the only ones that we could get to burn at 18x, with the rest doing 16x maximum. The LG drive was impressive though, with speedy write times even at 16x and with the TDK DVD-R the fastest 18x at slightly more than 5 minutes.

16x DVD-/+R

Brands of Media used:-

  • Maxell 16x DVD+R = RITEKF1
  • Fujifilm 16x DVD+R = PRODISCR05
  • TDK 16x DVD+R = TDK003
  • TDK 16x DVD-R = TTH02
  • Maxell 16x DVD-R = RICOHJPNR03
  • Fujifilm 16x DVD-R = PRODISCF02

8x DVD-/+R and DVD-R DL

  • Verbatim 8x DVD-R = MCC02RG20
  • Fujifilm 8x DVD+R = YUDEN000T02
  • Fujifilm 8x DVD-R = TYG02
  • Verbatim 4x DVD-R DL

Although the LG is technically rated at 10x write speed for dual layer DVD media, we could not find suitable media to test this in time. The Verbatim 4x DVD-R DL could only be burnt at 4x, despite Verbatim stating that 8x speed is possible on selected writers. Apparently this LG is not one of those 'select' high speed models and so it took almost 30 minutes to finish the disc. Earlier, in the previous page, we had also burnt a 2.4x rated DVD+R DL media from Verbatim and the LG could not manage to overspeed it.
