Test Setup

Like almost all the other Radeon X1800 XT cards that we have tested, our test system for this shootout was based on the ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard, of which we had installed an Athlon 64 3500+ processor. 1GB of Corsair DDR400 RAM was used, together with a Seagate 7200.7 SATA hard drive with Windows XP Professional installed and updated to Service Pack 1. DirectX 9.0c was also installed.

For those who missed this important fact nugget, the HIS Radeon X1800 XT 512MB OC Edition is overclocked to 700MHz for the core and 1600MHz DDR for the memory. This places it in the same overclocked category (based on their technical specifications) as the Gigabyte GV-RX18T512V-B Turbo Force Edition and the ASUS EAX1800XT TOP. We used ATI's Catalyst 5.11 drivers in the following benchmarks:

  • Futuremark 3DMark05 Pro (version 120)
  • Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (version 1.1)
  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3: Chaos Theory (version 1.3)
  • Quake 4
