Gamers will do anything it takes to be at the top of their game; from buying low response LCD screens, to overclocking their systems and spending large sums on gaming peripherals. The only limit, it seems, is the depth of one's pockets.

Hence, Razer is one brand that most gamers should be especially familiar with. After all, their legendary Boomslang was probably the first ever gaming grade mouse.

Of course, Razer don't just make mice. The Goliathus Gaming Mouse Mat is their latest product and it is a premium grade soft mouse mat, which according to Razer, will combine the speed and acceleration of hard mats with the precision and comfort of soft ones. It comes in two flavors, "Speed" for those looking for a slicker experience and "Control" for those looking for greater precision.

So fancy names aside, does the Goliathus provide any noticeable gain in performance? Let's find out.

Stunning in Black

As with all Razer products, the Goliathus is aesthetically pleasing. Dark as night, and emblazoned with only the Razer and Goliathus logo, the mat has a simple and rather stylish look. The surface is textured yet smooth as silk, while the bottom is rubberized so that it has a good grip no matter what surface it is on.

The Goliathus is available in three sizes, leaving users spoilt for choice. However, the standard size mat, which we tested, is pretty large and should be more than adequate for most users.

Performance Gain?

After testing both the Goliathus Speed and Control with a variety of mice, namely a Razer Diamondback 3G, a basic Logitech Optical USB mouse and a tiny Dicota travel mouse, we found the mats to greatly improve our mouse movements and control.

Comparing the two mats, the Speed Edition has a smoother surface and unsurprisingly we found our strokes on the Speed to be much slicker, allowing us to rapidly mouse across the entire screen with a flick of the wrist. Its fluidity is something that needs to be experienced to be fully appreciated.

On the other hand, we found the Control Edition's surface to be highly textured, more so than the Speed and almost a little rough even. This gives you a greater feel for the mouse, which translates to increased precision, which can only be a boon for snipers in first person shooter games.

Final Thoughts

All things considered, these Goliathus mouse mats are excellent products in its class. However, they are not just for gamers and we highly recommend anyone who spends a great amount of time at the computer to consider investing in one. With prices starting at S$21 for the smallest-sized mat, you'll be happy to know that it won't leave a big hole in your pockets.
