ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB GDDR5 - Two Heads are Better than One

Temperature & Power Consumption

Temperature

It was never going to be an easy task keeping two GPU cores cool, and our results confirmed this. At 84 degrees Celsius, the 4870 X2 it is easily the hottest GPU here, and perhaps even in our testing history. Looking closely at the graph, it becomes evident that NVIDIA's GPUs, despite being manufactured on 65nm process, are consistently cooler than those of ATI's.

Power Consumption

Once again, the Radeon HD 4870 X2 established a new high here because of its dual GPU nature. Thankfully, however, our tests showed that it drew approximately 224W at idle and 443W at load, which is substantially lower than that of dual Radeon HD 4870 cards in CrossFire setup. So there is yet another reason to opt for the X2 card than a CrossFire setup. These figures, however, are still nothing to shout about and you'll need a good 600W PSU or higher rated one preferably to ensure your system is well juiced.
