Introduction

Introduction

Thus far, Intel has managed to confuse a majority of users with their launch of the new P965 chipset. Although it is a mainstream chipset, it sports new memory optimizations that rivals the 975X Express and the new ICH8 Southbridge has quite a number of new upgrades. However, the 975X Express is still the only (and may be the last) Intel chipset to actually feature CrossFire support, which will be more important to gamers and enthusiasts than two extra SATA ports. However, the P965 has proven to be a very capable chipset with its performance and overclockability with the Core 2 Duo processors propelling its fame well beyond the mainstream market that Intel had intended for it. We've covered some excellent P965 boards from major players like MSI and Gigabyte previously and now we've got our hands on the ASUS P5B Deluxe.

The ASUS P5B Deluxe WiFi-AP Edition motherboard.

The P5B Deluxe is the top Intel P965 motherboard from ASUS, featuring a healthy mix of features and some of ASUS' new technologies in their Ai Life series. While the P5W DH Deluxe is touted as the best motherboard for digital home and extreme gaming, the P5B Deluxe tries to capitalize on the overclocking market.

The packaging of the board is a treasure chest by itself with a generous array of peripherals bundled, including additional ports, fans and InterVideo's new MediaOne suite. There are two versions of the board: a regular P5B Deluxe and a WiFi-AP Edition that comes with an additional WiFi module. Let's take a closer look at its specifications:-
