As successor to the Portege R930, the new notebook comes encased in a black magnesium Tough Body chassis, which offers increased protection with a shock-absorbing design, and a unique honeycomb reinforcement structure for increased rigidity and durability. Measuring 18.3mm at its thinnest point, it incorporates Toshiba's EasyGuard technology to help safeguard the laptop’s critical components against the stress and hazards of today’s mobile world and undergoes rigorous spill, drop and Highly Accelerated Life (HALT) testing at Toshiba facilities in Japan, and the AirFlow II cooling technology that keeps the device cool.

With the standard Trusted Platform Module (TPM) security, the R30 includes a fingerprint reader, cable slot, and optional smartcard reader for added security. Besides a matt, spill-resistant keyboard, the system integrates three USB 3.0 ports plus a full-size HDMI, media card reader, RGB and LAN port. Also, it improves on-the-go convenience with an all-workday battery with a user-replaceable battery.

Powered by a 4th gen Intel Core processor and up to 16GB of RAM, it includes a 13.3-inch HD LED backlit screen, a built-in DVD-RW, and integrated Intel graphics. Its enhanced HD webcam with dual microphones ensure optimized viewing and voice clarity during conference calls, while the built-in stereo speakers with DTS Studio Sound audio enhancement provides acoustic entertainment.
