We already knew about Samsung’s flagship consumer SSD, the 840 Pro; but for most people, the cheaper 840 Evo, with its TLC NAND and newer controller, is usually fast enough. And now with the new 840 Evo, Samsung has managed to fit 1TB of storage into a much smaller 1.5-inch mSATA form factor. This feat is achieved by using four flash memory packages, with each package having 16 layers of 128Gb NAND chips.

According to Samsung, besides using its own controller that features the TurboWrite technology, a high performance write buffer that the 2.5-inch 840 Evo also sports, the new 1.5-inch 840 Evo SSD has sequential read and write speeds of up to 540 and 520 MB/s respectively. In addition, with the company’s Magician 4.3 software and making use of RAPID (Real-time Accelerated Processing of I/O Data) mode, an insanely-fast 1,000MB/s sequential read speed is achievable.

The Samsung 1TB 840 Evo SSD launches worldwide this month, and will arrive in Singapore in January 2014. If you don’t need 1TB, other capacities (120GB, 250GB, 500GB) are also available. Watch this space - we’ll update pricing and availability details once we get them from Samsung.
