Rumors of a 10.1-inch Nokia Windows RT tablet surfaced as early as December 2012, and it seems that its launch is imminent.

According to The Verge, sources familiar with Nokia's plans revealed that the Windows RT tablet will be launched soon. It is apparently given the codename Sirius. The final design is said to resemble Nokia's Lumia Windows Phone devices.

In addition, sources told The Verge that Sirius is thinner and lighter than the current Apple iPad. The fourth generation iPad (cellular) measures 9.41mm thick and weighs 662g. Alleged specs of the tablet include:

  • Display resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • 32GB internal storage
  • 4G LTE connectivity
  • 6-megapixel rear camera
  • 2-megapixel front-facing camera
  • micro-SD card slot
  • micro-HDMI and micro-USB ports

A keyboard accessory is in the works, which also acts as a battery pack. The tablet will be priced in the same range as the Apple iPads. It is expected to be announced at a launch event in New York on 26 September.

Nokia's decision to back Windows RT comes at a time when support for the operating system is waning. ASUS CEO Jonney Shih recently said that the company is pulling back on Windows RT as "the result is not very promising." Moreover, Microsoft took a US$900 million writedown for unsold inventory of the Surface RT tablets and slashed prices in a bid to clear inventory.
