Meet Pencil - the New iPad Stylus from FiftyThree, Makers of the Paper App

There are tools you need and there are tools you lust after. The new Pencil from FiftyThree is definitely a tool to lust after.

Pencil is the first hardware product from FiftyThree, makers of the Paper app for iPad which won Apple's App of the Year award in 2012 (and is one of our top 10 apps for the iPad). On the surface, Pencil looks like any other capacitive stylus, but built-in Bluetooth gives it three unique features when used with Paper: Palm rejection, Erase (using the top tip), and Blend, where you can draw lines with Pencil and use your fingers to smooth edges and blend colors.

Pencil might not make much sense as a stylus for someone who uses her iPad for annotating PDFs, but if you're an avid Paper user or a digital painter, you'd appreciate how exquisite FiftyThree's stylus looks.

Pencil is available in two materials, Walnut - which FiftyThree assures has "met rigorous standards for sustainability" - and Graphite, or brushed aluminium in black. It is now available in the U.S. and Canada at the introductory prices of US$59.95 for the walnut and US$49.95 for Graphite.

The Verge has a nice article about Pencil, and you can also find out more on FiftyThree's website.
