AMD Reaches 5GHz Clock Speed with 8-Core FX-9590 Processor

AMD has unveiled its new FX-9590 processor with a turbo clock speed of 5GHz. The eight-core CPU boasts of the improved 'Piledriver' chip architecture, and it comes unlocked so as to allow for overclocking.

The base clock of the FX-9590 CPU is actually lower than 5GHz but it is able to hit this mark with the help of its Turbo Core technology. The other processor from the new FX-9000 series is the FX-9370, which boasts of a maximum turbo clock speed of 4.7GHz. AMD unveiled the new FX-9000 series at E3 in order to position them as the gaming processors of choice.

AMD has chosen not to reveal the base clocks of the new Socket AM3+ 'Vishera' processors for now; however, we speculate the FX-9590 is rated at 4.75GHz while the FX-9370 has a base clock of 4.5GHz. The company stated both chips will be available by this summer but they haven't revealed their pricing details yet. For the official press release from AMD, please head on over here.
