Canon imageCLASS MF269dw review

While home users normally go for color inkjet printers for their flexibility, business users who have no desire to print in color or photos tend to go for mono laser printers. If you’re in this latter group, you can consider the Canon imageCLASS MF269dw, a S$379 multifunction laser printer that prints up to 28 mono pages per minute.

The MF269dw is, thankfully, not just a one-trick pony. In addition to print, it can also take on scan and copy jobs thank to its built-in scanner, as well as send and receive faxes.

More crucially, the MF269dw has a 50-sheet duplex auto document feeder to make light work of copying, scanning, or faxing of multi-page, two-sided documents. To incentivize you to save paper, it also comes with an auto duplexer, which means it will automatically flip the paper when you choose to print on both sides.

In terms of media handling, the MF269dw comes with a 250-sheet paper drawer and a single-sheet input slot. The operation panel, which has both an LCD screen and tactile buttons (albeit a bit plasticky) for key functions like print and the numpad, can be tilted so users can adjust the angle to have a better view of the controls. I particularly like that I can create a shortcut key that remembers my favorite scan settings, such as save destination and file type. Scans can also be sent over email or saved to a shared folder for easy retrieval later.

The MF269dw is a network-enabled printer with built-in wired and wireless LAN. In addition to supporting AirPrint, Mopria, and Google Cloud Print, you can also use the machine on your mobile device through the Canon Print Business app. This app is needed to make full use of the MF269dw, like when you want to print from cloud storage or adjust scan settings remotely. You can also snap a photo and correct the perspective before sending it for print with this app.

When it comes to performance, the MF269dw doesn’t disappoint. In my tests, the printer could print as fast as 28.7 pages per minute in simplex mode and 18.3 ppm in duplex mode.

First-page-out speeds are equally great: 5 seconds in simplex mode and slightly under 10 seconds for a two-sided printout. Quality-wise, text looks tact sharp and even fine lines from CAD drawings are neat and well defined.

To sum up, the Canon imageCLASS MF269dw prints fast, prints well, and is decked with features that I believe its target audience will find useful. The only knock is that versus ink tank system printers, its cost per print remains high. For example, the MF269dw has a high volume toner that prints 4,100 pages but is priced at $140. On the other hand, the Epson M2140 ink tank printer’s single $15 ink bottle can last a good 6,000 pages.

The printer has a 6-line monochrome touch LCD, but it also has physical buttons for key functions (e.g. numpad).

The printer supports USB 2.0 and 10/100 Base-T Ethernet, as well as 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi.

The replacement drum for the MF269dw is priced at S$126, and a standard toner (good for 1,700 pages) costs S$94. Canon also sells a higher-yield toner (4,100 pages) for S$140.
